Revised Rock Springs Plan Looks to Balance Wildlife Conservation, Recreation, & Economic Considerations

This release kicks off a 30-day protest period and a 60-day Governor’s consistency review.

LANDER (August 22, 2024) --  The proposed Rock Springs Resource Management Plan the Bureau of Land Management issued today will guide the management of 3.6 million acres of public BLM lands in the Rock Springs area for the next two decades or longer.

The plan, released after considering robust public input and engagement, balances conservation measures for wildlife and wild places, recreational opportunities, and important economic drivers for southwest Wyoming.

“We thank the agency for incorporating feedback from nearly 40,000 public comments and the Governor’s task force, making for a plan that better aligns with local concerns and objectives, while still conserving the wildlife and landscapes that Wyoming hunters, anglers, and others greatly treasure,” said Joy Bannon, executive director of the Wyoming Wildlife Federation.

“The BLM also properly plans to defer to Governor Gordon’s Executive Order on Migration Corridor management, a policy that was developed with stakeholder input to ensure deer and pronghorn migrations remain permeable into the future.”

This release kicks off a 30-day protest period as well as a 60-day Governor’s consistency review.

ABOUT THE ROCK SPRINGS RMP

This plan has implications for wildlife and sportsmen for the next 15-20 years, plus the potential to make lasting changes to the landscape, both positive and not.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages 3.6 million acres of public land in the area. Within those areas are six priority habitats WWF and our partners wish to see conserved.

These areas include huge off-road recreation areas, oil and gas development, livestock grazing, crucial winter range for mule deer, vast open spaces for pronghorn, healthy Greater Sage-grouse populations, and much more.
