Ant food experiment

Time: 15 minutes x 2

Materials: possible ant foods (eg. cat food, fruit, oil, granola bars, cheese, meat, peanut butter, marshmallow, or candy)

Activity: Find an active ant mound. Ask the kids what they think that the ants like to eat. Present the possible ant foods and lay them an equal distance from the ant mound (could find two mounds to compare). Ask which of the foods the kids think the ants will like to eat. Leave and check 1-2 hours later. Observe which food(s) the ants are swarming. Were your guesses correct? What kinds of foods do ants like? Music bonus: sing “The Ants Go Marching” along the way.
