Bird beaks
Time: 15-20 minutes
Materials: pickup tools (tweezers, spoons, forks), objects to pick up (pennies, toothpicks, marbles), cups
Activity: Point out that different birds have different beaks that help them eat. Pelicans have huge beaks for scooping up fish. Eagles have sharp beaks for tearing up their food. Finches have short strong beaks for cracking seeds. Hummingbirds have long skinny beaks for sipping nectar like a straw. Distribute the pickup tools. The kids will be birds and these are their beaks. Spread out the pickup objects. These are the birds’ food. Give each kid a cup. This is their stomach. Give the kids 30 seconds to pick up food with their beak and put it in their stomach. Sort and count the food items at the end. See if you can decide which beaks were best for picking up which food.
