Flower exploration

Materials: flowers, plastic knives (optional), magnifying glasses (optional)

Activity: Show the kids the parts of the flower, petals, pistil, stamens, stem. If the flower has pollen, put some on your finger and show the kids. Explain how pollinators like bees and butterflies move pollen between flowers and once the pollen is on the pistil, the flower can make seeds to grow new plants. Give kids or pairs of kids each a flower. Have them examine the flower. Possible questions to answer: What color is it? Is it big or small? (bonus measure the flowers) Does it smell nice or yucky? How many leaves? How many petals? Art bonus: Have them draw their flowers. Once they have examined the flowers, they can use their fingers or plastic knives to take apart the flowers. Look at each of the pieces and how they go together. Share any observations, especially if kids have different kinds of flowers.
