Make a trail

Time: 15-20 minutes

Materials: birdseed, breadcrumbs, or something else to mark a trail, treats (optional)

Activity: Have an instructor lay down a trail for kids to follow in an outdoor play area or have one kid set the trail for the rest to follow. Talk about the kinds of trail markers that people use such as cairns, tree blazes, bent twigs, or drawing in the dirt. Imagine a situation, real or pretend, where the kids might want to follow a trail. Follow the trail, pretending as you go. Repeat, increasing the distance between clues or the complexity of the trail as time and attention allow. Literacy bonus: Read Hansel and Gretel and use that story as the imagination spark for your trail following.
