Tornado in a bottle
Time: 15-20 minutes
Materials: Clear bottle(s) with a cap, dish soap, glitter or food coloring (optional)
Activity: Go outside and ask kids to make the strongest wind they can make. Tell kids when thunderstorms have lots of power, sometimes they can make very strong winds that go in a circle, which is called a tornado. Real tornadoes are dangerously strong, but we can make a tornado in a bottle and have fun watching it. Fill the bottles ¾ full with water and add a drop of soap and food coloring and/or glitter, if desired. Seal the bottle tightly. Swirl the bottle, cap side down, in a circular motion, observing the vortex. Kids can take turns trying to swirl the bottle or you can make multiple bottles.
