Transpiration
Time: 20 minutes active, 1-2 hours waiting
Materials: baggies
Activity: Ask kids if they knew that trees breathe. Trees breathe through their leaves and as they do, water evaporates from tiny holes in the leaves. The evaporation pulls water up from the tree’s roots. There’s a fancy word for that called transpiration. Give each kid a baggie and help them seal it over the end of a twig with air space in the bag. Leave the baggies for 1-2 hours and come back. The baggies will have collected a few teaspoons of water from the trees moving water.
