Create a compost/worm bin
Time: 15-30 minutes pre-work, 30 minutes setup + 5-10 minute check ins
Materials: plastic container (2 liter soda bottle up to 10 gallon tote), worms, tray to catch drips
Activity: Before the activity, drill 10 small holes all over the container including the bottom for airflow and drainage. Prompt kids to think about the trash that they throw away and where it ends up. Reducing or reusing our trash helps keep landfills from filling up and composting or using a worm bin is one way that we can make our trash into something useful for our gardens. Fill the bin with worms and layers of damp newspaper and plant refuse like fruit and vegetable peels. Keep the bin inside out of direct sun. Worm castings can be harvested and spread outside every 3-4 months. Kids can observe the contents through a clear plastic container or by occasionally opening the bin and digging out a shovel full of compost to examine. Keep the bin moist but not wet and there should be minimal odor.
