Activity: Make homemade bird feeders and hang/place them in a place where you can observe birds during the day. Simple designs include pinecones rolled in peanut butter and birdseed, bowls with holes punched in the rim hung with string, and soda bottles with holes cut in the side and dowel perches. Sunflower seeds will attract the widest diversity of feeder birds. Thistle seeds are preferred by goldfinches, but are also more expensive. Millet-based seed mixes are lower quality and not as good a value. During early fall and late spring, oranges or apples may attract orioles.
