Cooperative challenge

Time: 15-20 minutes

Materials: 3 hula hoops

Activity: Set two boundaries about 15-20 feet apart and line up on one side. Pretend you are all aboard a sinking ship and need to get everyone off and to the shore safely using only the “life boats” (hula hoops). Kids can put any number of passengers in a boat, but as soon as someone steps out of the boat, everybody has to go back to the ship. Kids can step in the hoops or between hoops that are on the ground touching and may pick up hoops, but only hoops that are empty (no picking up your boat and walking). Hula hoops cannot be dragged behind another boat or tossed but they can be handed to other people when empty. Passengers may step out of the lifeboat when they have reached land, but they may not throw the hoops back to the boat. Challenging variation: limit the numbers of passengers in each lifeboat.
