Making patterns

Time: 10-15 minutes

Materials: None

Activity: Using natural objects or drawing in the dirt, set out a pattern in a line for kids to continue or replicate. Pattern examples: A B A B (leaf, stone, leaf, stone), A B B A B B (dash, dot, dot, dash, dot, dot). Laying out three sets of the pattern to examine can help with recognition. Have kids set patterns for each other to follow. This activity can lead to opportunities for discussing the difference between creating patterns and mirroring (replicating a random set of objects).
