Pine cone exploration
Time: 15-25 minutes
Materials: nonstandard measurement units (cubes, lego bricks, etc.), paper and crayons
Activity: Go on a hunt and find some pinecones outside. Hunt until each kid has one. Take them back to the play area if it’s nice out or back to the classroom. Have kids pair and compare their pinecones (bigger/smaller, taller/shorter, shape/number/thickness of scales, closed/open). Pinecones hold the seeds of pine trees. Can kids find any seeds? (probably not) Can they find the dent inside where the seed used to be? Measure the pinecones using your nonstandard measurement units. If desired, look at the class data, which was the tallest? Shortest? Finish by drawing your pinecone.
